Doing Good

Our church has strong emphasis on evangelism programs and mission. Souls, converts and discipleship is in the hearts of our pastors. Kind acts, gracful gestures and being a good samaritan in busy Kuala Lumpur is one of the ways to be a salt and light in this city. Here's a motivating true story from BBC. I pray we will be a good samaritan and continue doing good in 2011.

A real Good Samaritan

The police called at my student hovel early evening, but I didn't answer as I thought they'd come to evict me. I hadn't paid my rent in months.

But then I got to thinking: my mum hadn't been too good and what if it was something about her?

We had no phone in the hovel and mobiles hadn't been invented yet, so I had to nip down the phone box.

I rang home to Leeds to find my mother was in hospital and not expected to survive the night. "Get home, son," my dad said.

I got to the railway station to find I'd missed the last train. A train was going as far as Peterborough, but I would miss the connecting Leeds train by twenty minutes.

I bought a ticket home and got on anyway. I was a struggling student and didn't have the money for a taxi the whole way, but I had a screwdriver in my pocket and my bunch of skeleton keys.

I was so desperate to get home that I planned to nick a car in Peterborough, hitch hike, steal some money, something, anything. I just knew from my dad's tone of voice that my mother was going to die that night and I intended to get home if it killed me.

"Tickets, please," I heard, as I stared blankly out of the window at the passing darkness. I fumbled for my ticket and gave it to the guard when he approached. He stamped it, but then just stood there looking at me. I'd been crying, had red eyes and must have looked a fright.

"You okay?" he asked.

"Course I'm okay," I said. "Why wouldn't I be? And what's it got to do with you in any case?"

"You look awful," he said. "Is there anything I can do?"

"You could get lost and mind your own business," I said. "That'd be a big help." I wasn't in the mood for talking.

He was only a little bloke and he must have read the danger signals in my body language and tone of voice, but he sat down opposite me anyway and continued to engage me.

"If there's a problem, I'm here to help. That's what I'm paid for."

I was a big bloke in my prime, so I thought for a second about physically sending him on his way, but somehow it didn't seem appropriate. He wasn't really doing much wrong. I was going through all the stages of grief at once: denial, anger, guilt, withdrawal, everything but acceptance. I was a bubbling cauldron of emotion and he had placed himself in my line of fire.

The only other thing I could think of to get rid of him was to tell him my story.

"Look, my mum's in hospital, dying, she won't survive the night, I'm going to miss the connection to Leeds at Peterborough, I'm not sure how I'm going to get home.

"It's tonight or never, I won't get another chance, I'm a bit upset, I don't really feel like talking, I'd be grateful if you'd leave me alone. Okay?"

"Okay," he said, finally getting up. "Sorry to hear that, son. I'll leave you alone then. Hope you make it home in time." Then he wandered off down the carriage back the way he came.

I continued to look out of the window at the dark. Ten minutes later, he was back at the side of my table. Oh no, I thought, here we go again. This time I really am going to rag him down the train.

He touched my arm. "Listen, when we get to Peterborough, shoot straight over to Platform One as quick as you like. The Leeds train'll be there."

I looked at him dumbfounded. It wasn't really registering. "Come again," I said, stupidly. "What do you mean? Is it late, or something?"

"No, it isn't late," he said, defensively, as if he really cared whether trains were late or not. "No, I've just radioed Peterborough. They're going to hold the train up for you. As soon as you get on, it goes.

"Everyone will be complaining about how late it is, but let's not worry about that on this occasion. You'll get home and that's the main thing. Good luck and God bless."

Then he was off down the train again. "Tickets, please. Any more tickets now?"

I suddenly realised what a top-class, fully-fledged doilem I was and chased him down the train. I wanted to give him all the money from my wallet, my driver's licence, my keys, but I knew he would be offended.

I caught him up and grabbed his arm. "Oh, er, I just wanted to…" I was suddenly speechless. "I, erm…"

"It's okay," he said. "Not a problem." He had a warm smile on his face and true compassion in his eyes. He was a good man for its own sake and required nothing in return.

"I wish I had some way to thank you," I said. "I appreciate what you've done."

"Not a problem," he said again. "If you feel the need to thank me, the next time you see someone in trouble, you help them out. That will pay me back amply.

"Tell them to pay you back the same way and soon the world will be a better place."

I was at my mother's side when she died in the early hours of the morning. Even now, I can't think of her without remembering the Good Conductor on that late-night train to Peterborough and, to this day, I won't hear a bad word said about British Rail.

My meeting with the Good Conductor changed me from a selfish, potentially violent hedonist into a decent human being, but it took time.

"I've paid him back a thousand times since then," I tell the young people I work with, "and I'll keep on doing so till the day I die. You don't owe me nothing. Nothing at all."

"And if you think you do, I'd give you the same advice the Good Conductor gave me. Pass it down the line."

God Heals

Last friday, I made an appointment with Mother of All Servant, brother Lud for an early dinner. We had a practice for the prayer meeting after that. In the afternoon at 3pm I came down with a headache and thought an afternoon nap would relief it. Unfortunately it was only slightly better and I was contemplating to skip practice and the prayer meeting altogether. However it would be difficult to find a last minute replacement and not to mention, a bad example. So I reluctantly got up at 7pm and headed for practice. I had to endure the headache through the practice and prayer meeting. However an instanteneous healing took place as I left the church. Under normal circumstances it would take me another day before relief came. Praise be to God. He is faithful to those who are faithful to Him. Bless His Holy Name!

10 Worship Guidelines from the Early Church

By Dr. Lee Martin McDonald

1. Worship Involves Sacrifice
In New Testament times, worship consisted initially of sacrifice (of animals). However, the focus of worship for Christians is on self-sacrifice in honor and adoration of Christ (Mark 8:34-36). Worship appears to be the total response of grateful persons to the grace of God that comes to us in the work of Jesus Christ (see Romans 12:1-2). It is no longer related to the temple notion of animal sacrifice, but rather, in Christ the whole Church has become a temple and a priesthood inhabited by the Holy Spirit or presence of God (see 1 Cor. 6:19; Eph. 2:19-22; and 1 Pet. 2:9).

2. Worship Is Spiritual
Even though worship does involve rituals, our worship, from a New Testament perspective, is essentially spiritual (see 1 Pet. 2:5; Rom. 12:2). It was an internal attitude rather than a practice of external rituals. This understanding is also found in Isaiah 1:11-20 and Psalm 51:15-17.

Testimony of a Former Spy and Eldest Son of Hamas founder

Tim.L note: Something interesting I came across while browsing the web

Mosab Yousef, a former terrorist and the son of a Hamas founder appeared on The 700 Club to share about his experiences about becoming a Christian. He studied many religions prior to his choice. He also talks about how Christianity helps him love his enemies: to deal with bad memories, to win over enemies through love, and not to dictate over them. "This is how Christ defeated the world, when he loved in the most difficult and painful position on the Cross." http://downloads.cbn.com/cbnnewsplayer/cbnplayer.swf?aid=14417

Mosab is the first-born son of one of the founders of Hamas, Sheik Hassan Yousef. Mosab left Islam and secretly worked with Israeli intelligence to capture terrorists on the condition that they be imprisoned and not killed. He prevented suicide bombings and other attacks, and has recently been granted political asylum in the US in June 2010.

Rainbow Home Ex-Resident

Recognize that face? No, not the one of the right..... that's me! The guy on the left. Yep, you got it! That's Daniel who spent a few years at Rainbow home. His ambition was to be a "taiko", that's coloquail for a gangster. Today, he's a "consultant" at an Optical shop earning a honest living.

The Bible exhorts us to do good at all times to all people. That's what the Rainbow Home has been doing, come rain or shine since it's inception. Not everyone will "graduate" and turn out how we want them to be. But the beacon still shines irregardless whether some turn bad while others find Jesus and make something out of their lives.

Let us continue doing good!

Going Double

We are going double in September. As we prepare to double our worship service, we know that more is required of the worship team. The strategy is for the same team to play twice each Sunday.
1. Did I hear 'play twice'. Wow! - playing twice - what an honor. To be able to do the thing you love and are gifted for a second time - what an honor. Its like a double helping of ice-cream, double delicious cakes, double premium Brazilian coffee...or double any food you like to eat.

World Cup: May The Best Team Wins

Quote from Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak The Star Online
“For a football team to succeed, all players in the team, irrespective of their position, need to work together and play as a team. However great the footballers are as individual players, victory can only be achieved as a team".

Praise City Church worship teams comprise of projectionists, sound personnel, singers, worship leader, keyboardists, bassists, drummers as well as support people like key holders and data entry clerk for the Yahoogroup calender. Are we working as a team? Do we uphold or let dowqn our teammembers? Answer the questions below and we'll see if you are a team player!

  1. Do I know everyone's name in my team?
  2. Do I remember who my two buddies are?
  3. Have I called them within the last 2 weeks?
  4. Have I prayer for my team and worship leader in the last 2 weeks?
  5. Do I come for the practice with the songlist memorised?
  6. Do I come on time?
A "no" answer is room for improvement. More than 3 "no" is baaAADD!

I'm not getting into my ol' grumpy self this time. Gotta go take a nap to be ready for the opening match.

ARMY AND WARFARE

Last weeks's sermon by Pastor Aris had an emphasis on army of the Lord. Interesting reversal of scriptures in Joel. Instead of the locust army devouring, the army of the Lord heals and restores. As per my usual self I'll leave the smart saints to debate about that passage.

I just brought this up to CATCH YOUR ATTENTION! Now that I have, let me state that being the army of the Lord has never been my fancy. By nature, I am a diplomatic kind of guy. I dislike confrontations. When I do get confronted, I have no pride and will usually disagree by agreeing. Go figure that!

However since we are talking about the "army", and some of you guys/gals are the "army type", DID YOU KNOW I ACTUALLY HAVE AN ARMY ARTICLE ADAPTED FROM SUN TZU ART OF WAR? It is a gem that strategists will savour.

So here it is. You are supposed to click on the blue underline to view the article!

My "order" as general of the Creative Ministry of Praise City Church is to use this fantastic system of information dissemination and intelligence gathering. Look at Team A when they don't use it! Only 2 worship soldiers errr.. I mean..... singers on stage last week!

Anyway, what to do? We are all not army trained mah..... Some of you guys/gals are like me..... lovers of tau fu fa (BEANCURD). The moral of the story is the tools and systems are set. Please use them. Armies who DON'T usually get massacred..... now thats the TRUTH! And that's why I am not the army type.... I dislike blood, battles, etc

CHIA YEW/ADD PETROL!

The caption below is taken from The Star Online:

ACCORDING to sociologist Robert Bellah, “we should not underestimate the significance of the small group of people who have a new vision of a just and gentle world. The quality of a culture may be changed when 2% of its people have a new vision.”

The article is about fighting corruption. However the same can be said of any revival. It only takes a spark.... to get the fire going (source: SU scripture in song).

To those who have made it a point to be counted, to be early and prepared for practices/services, to have prayed for the ministry of music, I salute you. For those who made an effort to support the work of the Central Working Committee, I salute you. It may just be a handful, but to Jesus that's not a problem. After all Jesus took only 12(13) apostles to spread Christianity throughout the then known world.

I encourage you to Chia Yew, and again I say to you Chia Yew!
note: Chia Yew is translated as add gas/petrol to the fire

Brownout, Burnout, or Blackout?

This caption is from Pastor Ronnie Chin's sermon last sunday. Well, if you look at the dates of my blog, you will notice a decrease in entries. So is the blog browning out? Burning out? Or worse still experiencing a blackout? NEITHER OF THOSE! It's just that we have gone to 2nd gear!

In the first quarter we put in place the buddy system, fixed teams and evaluation report. We trained the sound personnels and they will be getting the certificate of completion this June. We fed you guys KFC. We have in hardcopy the PCC hanky panky book. Ooops .... I meant the HANDBOOK. In the month of May, I have been to every single practice to pray, exhort and spur the teams to a DEEPER spiritual encounter for sunday. Kok Yen has started the Worship 101 in the Bible Explorer. In June, the guitar training will start. So are we experiencing a brownout, burnout or blackout?

I think not. The reason articles are sparse is because I have been busy on the ground. Like you, I have only 24 hours a day. I am also waiting for the department to start reading. Once we have the handbook fully circulated and the entire department briefed and re-briefed, the REDOUT begins. Those who are counter productive to the ministry will find themselves issued the RED card by the referee.

Where are we heading?

So where are we heading? We are shifting to 2nd gear and it's at the threshold of the REDOUT season. We at the CWC are working triple hard to ensure that the music department will indeed grow from strength to strength! It can only be done if the members themselves grow from strength to strength. So come early. Be there before 5pm. Step into the spiritual dimension of worship leading after being musically/physically prepared. Expect to see the supernatural when God's people lift Him up! After all he did say "I will draw all men".

Shalom.

Going Up To The Next Level

by Pastor Aris

When someone complains that a program or presentation is 'boring', what do they actually mean?
They probably mean one or two things listed below...
1. There is nothing new about it.
2. They have seen/heard that before.
3. Nothing has changed or improved over the years. Its the same old thing. The worship structure is set in cement.
4. It is predictable. They can tell the end from the beginning of the program.
5. There are no 'wow' moments.
6. It is sub standard to what they are exposed to.
7. It lacks creativity
8. Mediocrisy is tolerated.

A worship service can easily melt down to a mere maintainance mode where worshippers just drift in and out every weekend without having an encounter with God. When this happens, who should take responsibility? When a TV series drops in its ratings, does the management blame the viewers that they dont know the value of the program. On the contrary, the management, the producers of the program takes a hard look at why they are not drawing the crowds and make the necessary changes to make the program exciting.

My Boo Boo

I want to apologize for a stupid action I took that has caused hurt and humiliation to brother Joe Lye. After service last sunday, he admonished me and I apologized. Though the apology was accepted, I feel I need to offer the apology here in the blog. Joe, I am sorry for the silly mistake I made. I am praying the hurt will only be for a short while.

What Happened?
Just before the service started, Joe walked up on stage with his instrument. I did not want the music arrangements to be disturbed since he did not come for practice and soundcheck. So instead of using PCC handbook guideline 4.4, which states "worship leader has the right to ask members to step down for that sunday if they are deemed counter productive to the worship service or to the team" , I made a wrong call by instructing the soundman to mute his microphone. Yeah, I know, stupid of me!

How Could You Make Such A Silly Decision?
I took the easy way out at a moment of weakness. Instead of exercising my authority, I thought I could please everybody by muting the mic. That way, Joe gets to play and not disturb the entire team. Well it backfired! I am not offering any excuses. It's just a dumb move - period.

Now why didn't I exercise my authority? Because we were about to go up and like I have said before, this is not sunday karaoke. I didn't want to get distracted or embroiled in negative emotions. Worship leading is not about singing some songs to Jesus. It is an utmost holy endeavour to lead God's people into His presence. Moving in prophecies, gifts of the Holy Spirit, healings and things of the Spirit (for me) requires concentration, prayer and spending much time seeking the face of God. So I did not want to be distracted and as a result, I made a big boo boo. In other words, I did not have the strength/will at that moment to say no to Joe.
If I had, he would be okay and so will I.

So Will Anything Good Come Out of This?
For one, a new article on this blog.
Two, now you know that we have a PCC handbook and implementation has started.
Three, I need to buck up.
Four, you need to buck up as we are now heading to a more spiritual emphasis of moving in power ministry, prophecy, gifts of the Holy Spirit, etc.
Lastly, pray for me and Joe. I am optimistic that this will be a start of more good things to come after the hurt has healed.

Why We Do What We Do:Part II The Power of Praise & Worship

Part I dealt with the 'Why'. Obviously there will be more of that in the later series. Today we deal with the 'What We Do' or What we are to achieve. More will be elaborated in the 2nd Quarter Meeting but let's look at 3 scriptures that I can recall off hand.

Scipture #1 - 1 Samuel 16:14 - 23 Evil Spirits Leave

14 Now the Spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul, and an evil b]">[b] spirit from the LORD tormented him.

15 Saul's attendants said to him, "See, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you. 16 Let our lord command his servants here to search for someone who can play the harp. He will play when the evil spirit from God comes upon you, and you will feel better."

17 So Saul said to his attendants, "Find someone who plays well and bring him to me."

18 One of the servants answered, "I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the harp. He is a brave man and a warrior. He speaks well and is a fine-looking man. And the LORD is with him."

19 Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, "Send me your son David, who is with the sheep." 20 So Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them with his son David to Saul.

21 David came to Saul and entered his service. Saul liked him very much, and David became one of his armor-bearers. 22 Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, "Allow David to remain in my service, for I am pleased with him."

23 Whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David would take his harp and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.

Keywords: The Lord is with David. Plays well. Evil spirit would leave.

Scripture #2 - Acts 16:24-26 Prison Doors & Chains Are Loosened

24Upon receiving such orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. 25About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody's chains came loose.

Scripture #3 - 2 Chronicles 2021-26 God Sets Ambushes Against Enemies

21
After consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the LORD and to praise him for the splendour of his holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying:

Give thanks to the LORD, for his love endures for ever.

22As they began to sing and praise, the LORD set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated.

23 The men of Ammon and Moab rose up against the men from Mount Seir to destroy and annihilate them. After they finished slaughtering the men from Seir, they helped to destroy one another.

24 When the men of Judah came to the place that overlooks the desert and looked towards the vast army, they saw only dead bodies lying on the ground; no-one had escaped.

25 So Jehoshaphat and his men went to carry off their plunder, and they found among them a great amount of equipment and clothing and also articles of value— more than they could take away. There was so much plunder that it took three days to collect it.

26 On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Beracah, where they praised the LORD. This is why it is called the Valley of Beracah to this day.

That's the power of Praise & Worship, which we the Creative Dept are the guardians and executors! More will be explained tomorrow at the 2nd Quarter Meeting.

An Interesting Observation

The article below was taken from Dr. Benjamin George's daily devotion emails. Interesting observation about flocks leaving by the backdoor!

I AM SHOCKED THAT YOU HAVE SO QUICKLY TURNED FROM GOD, WHO CHOSE YOU BECAUSE OF HIS WONDERFUL KINDNESS. GALATIANS 1.6.

‘Those who enter through the front door of the church are few and noticed but those who exit through the back door are many and unnoticed!’ One may take it as a joke but church leaders are only quick to endorse it. The early churches also had such problems. But the significant difference is that while there were apostles and other leaders in those days who cared enough to notice these faults and failures of the believers and caution and encourage them, today, many who are deserting go unobserved and forgotten.

In many of the large cathedrals and churches of the major denominations there is only one main entrance and the congregation uses it to enter and exit. The priest or the pastor is there, especially at the close of every service to personally greet every member. That personal touch with the leader himself is appreciated and valued by the members very much. Even though it does not give much time for each one to a have long conversation with his or her leader, no one wants to miss that opportunity to meet and greet him.

Definitely it takes more than a handshake to know how one’s flock is faring. That is why the parish priests or the pastors make regular home visits. Sadly this is seriously lacking in the Evangelical churches of today. It was hoped that the problem could be solved by having Cell Groups but not so! The simple reason is that most Cell leaders are secular men who are unable to be as dedicated as ‘pastors or priests’ because they are too busy with their work and too tired to take care of the sheep under them!

The lack or failure on the part of the leaders does not give the freedom for you and I to desert our faith or our Lord or our church. In today’s text we have the above serious remark by the apostle Paul about such believers, “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel”.

Why do Christians like you and I desert our Lord and our faith? The Word of God tells us clearly why. We love the world and the things of this world more than we love the Lord. They make little time with the Lord and His Word daily for they have no determination or desire to do so! Hence, it is always good to be forewarned. “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world--the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does--comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever” (1 Jn 2.15-17).

Pray and practise with me: Dear Lord, let me be not a deserter! Help me to love You more by daily reading Your Word and talking (praying) to You. Keep me from loving the world more than I love You, Lord!

Faith: Let's Take The Task By The Horn

Rambabu evangelistic Easter meetings have come and gone. The dust is settling. Miracles have been performed, hearts encouraged, and souls harvested. After the official "rest day", which is monday, the church gets hectic again with the follow-ups and what naught.

We can all shout "Praise The Lord" equiavalent or louder than we did in Rambabu's meeting. But let me draw your attention to Pastor Aris opening statement for the crusade and share a perspective from my end.

God is Attracted to Faith, Not Needs
That was a striking statement by the senior pastor. God doesn't neccessarily respond to needs or sick people. He, however, will respond to faith for or faith that resides in needy and sick people. Many people are in the hospitals but miraculous healings don't take place there. Healings take place in gospel rallies where there is faith in the name of Jesus to perform the miraculous! Striking but it was the truth. Hebrew 11:1 says Without faith it is impossible to please God....and that He rewards those that diligently seek Him.

Now, let me draw your attention to a particular statement brother Rambabu made on Good Friday. He said that God had already begun the process for healing and encouraged a couple to come for saturday and Easter sunday meetings. Here's the bummer. Wife was paralysed and on a makeshift recliner. My interpretation of that: he was stirring their faith and cheering them on towards God and healing. And that is what a healing evangelist does. They preach the gospel to inspire faith in Christ Jesus. And in the atmosphere of faith, God confirms His Word by signs and wonders. Now the natural man would have wanted a complete healing without effort. It's called Maggi Miracle. And God sometimes work in that manner. However in this couple's case, it was REALLY a test of faith. It was like the evangelist was putting huge obstacles in their search for healing! I couldn't imagined myself in the husband's place. I would have to endure the shame/pity/stigma/etc of getting help to transport a paralysed wife to and fro from church. Not once but 3 times! I would imagine it would be a big obstacle if I was not a believer. And to do that for all 3 services without any sign of improvement or healing? Wow.

Guess what? She DID come. All 3 services. Maybe with the help of church members. I don't really know, but she did come. Someone was or some people were determined enough. It can be argued it could have been faith or maybe just desperate human determination.

The Aftermath...History is still being written...
I do not know whether they received complete or partial healing. But just by their attendance of all 3 meetings, that should count for something. If they were not believers, that's about as much faith you're going to get. Now what? God has the power to heal and save but He responds to faith. Let's assume the couple has shown their faith. Healing process started. Church believes in God's will to heal and save. Church must now show her faith to complete the process. Here's my paradigm shift: In order to complete that circle of faith, and the healing process, there must be a continuous effort to build/maintain faith in the couple's heart. Faith comes by hearing the word of God. Someone's gotta go and continue sharing God's word till faith overflows and moves the hand of God! Which brings us to another faith obstacle. This time the visitation team will have to show their faith. If there was partial or no signs of improvement, how much faith do the church members have to GO and minister the word, AND persist on until the healing process is complete? Healing here refers to physical and spiritual. pun intended If I was in the visitation team, I would be scolding Rambabu for announcing the healing process but not finishing it!

What kind of doctrine is this?
Mine. Actually it's plain common sense, not doctrine. What do we hope for from the evangelistic meetings and the Be Contagious campaign? Souls added to God's Kingdom. To have souls added, there must be work! Lots and lots of visitation work, preaching work, etc! Bible says "Faith without works is DEAD". Miracles aside, work here would also mean charity, love, prayer, counselling, etc.

The next time someone says share your faith, consider the cost! I am sure after you weigh the cost you would be like the members of PCC visitation teams. This time tomorrow (tuesday), they will be out there sharing their faith and being the Lord's arm to those who need encouragement. Thier faith will be so strong that those needing miracles, whether big or small, will receive them because the circle of faith is completed.

Faith is being sure of things hoped for and certain of what is not seen. If you have faith for church growth, this WILL be a busy week/month for you! Go in God's strength! Let your faith take the TASK by the horn!

Tim.L

Note: Faith is not just about taking risk, or being daring or even being determined. It is believe base on the logos or rhema word of God.

Let's Get Excited

The poll conducted on Hillsong Conference can be concluded that a number will be interested to go if the cost was under RM1,000. Well, let's get excited! It is still too early to tell but I have spoken with Pastor Aris and the CWC is now looking into sending a delegation next year! Let;s start talking about it. Then let's start getting excited. Combine that with initiative and faith, and viola, where there's a will, there's a way. He who thinks, becomes. Ok lar...that's not original... it's my paraphrase of a Bible verse.

Please give suggestions on how we can achieve this goal for 2011 Conference in Sydney.

I Worship You As I Lay My Head to Sleep

What can I say, as my spirit quietens down and as I'm about to go to bed, as I reflect over the miraculous healings and salvation, Ah Lord God, you are but Beautiful....

What to pray for Malaysia?

What can we pray for Malaysia? Well, if you have run dry on what to pray, why not pray over the points of the following article? Article is taken from Malaysia Today http://www.malaysia-today.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=30931:real-cost-of-nep-insights-from-an-ice-cream-seller&catid=18:letterssurat&Itemid=100129

I cant help but put in my two scoops worth over the recent discourse over the cost of the affirmative action policies we have undertaken over the years – which affected the most part of my life.

By Roland K Selvanayagam

Numbers have been tossed in the air but essentially, the real costs cannot be quantified. Its ill implementation has affected our lives in more areas than we can sit up and observe

Lets look at a convenient 10

1) Education

Up to the late 60's our education was considered top class from primary to tertiary level. Even the diploma awarding colleges had a certain class about them eg the precursor to the now Universit Teknologi Malaysia

Thanks to the politicised implementation by our 'educators', our schools are now shunned. Tuition after hours becomes almost a standard. What our 'teachers' do not do in schools, the tuition teachers fill in. When the string of distinctions are announced, the schools and their teachers claim the credit.

I need go no further than my own two children.

Universities locally are generally avoided unless one cannot afford the alternative of overseas education or private sector university colleges.

The atmosphere in schools and public universities are so sterile that I wonder if I am sometimes in Brunei.

2) Health

I remember visiting our old GH in KL in the 60's and 70's and also the UH in Petaling Jaya.

The doctors and nurses were dedicated, pretty professional and you never really thought of going to a private hospital for better treatment.

Today, one has to ensure private health insurance is in place or 'endure' the public healthcare system.Sure there are exceptions out there but then, that should have been the rule. How many lower middle class and upward segments of our society opt to have their babies delivered in the government hospitals? That itself is a gauge of damnation.

Why We Do What We Do:Part I Bought By The Blood of The Lamb

This is a multi part series. It is advisable to read all to get the full picture of PCC culture and teaching.

Some of us here are asking the questions below:
  • Why do we slothe through hours of practice? Why spend extra hours?
  • Why do we get admonished for coming late or not turning up for sound check?
  • Why do we bother with memorizing the lyrics? Searching through Youtube to learn the songs?
  • Why have the songlist been given 1 week in advance?
  • Who cares if the chords are a bit wrong? So what if the singer is out of time? So the projectionist is a bit late in changing slides? So what?
  • Why should I commit fixed teams and weeks? Why can't I serve as and when I like with who I like?
The Why We DO What We Do series of article will adress the questions above and give us a sense of mission.

In the last Sound Engineering training conducted by me, the fees were donated to the PCC Creative Ministry fund. In other words, I gave away RM1,600. That's equiavalent to my dream handphone, the Nokia N97. Most people may not realize this but PCC members Pastor David & Bernard, Jim Abigo and Joseph Oleyemi has attended GSUS training in previous years. Incidentally, the collection was the same amount, which was collected by GSUS the company. So why am I trying to prove? That I am a benevolent guy? That I can afford to give away X ringgit?

Why, why tell me why? Anita Mui
Really, ask yourself this: Why am I in the music department? Why do I sing/dance/play an instrument? Why do I put in so much effort to practice and learn songs? STOP! Rewind and repeat the last line slowly, meditate on it, and tell yourself the answer outloud.

While you are thinking that through, I'll tell you what I don't believe in: There is no such thing as volunteers in the Kingdom of God! Really, I'm not kidding! Is there a volunteer position? There are apostles, pastors, evangelists, teachers, prophets, etc. There are servants of Christ, ambassador of Christ, those who GO for Christ and "Lord send me" types. Volunteers? Hmmm....

My guess your answer is this: I am serving God through my musical talents in the music department. And that is Why We Do What We Do.

Let me testify that I are serving God because Jesus died for me, saved me, turned my life around for the good of me and those around me. I am doing what any servant of the Lord would. And that is this: All true disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ have taken an oath, Jesus is the Lord and Master of our lives. As Paul puts it, "For me to live is Christ...". So since I am a talented in the area of music, and I serve God effectively in the music department. Would that be part of your answer too?

No, I am not a rich guy nor am I that benevolent a chap. I counted the cost and we need good quality sound personnel. What's the point of practicing so hard only to be compromised by bad sound? I am sure any of you would do the same if you were in my position.

And the conclusion is?
We do enjoy the music, singing, etc. We do enjoy our musical hobby. Boys and girls will look at us when we are on stage. We have a productive thing to do during saturday afternoons. BUT above and beyond the last 3 sentences, we serve God because we are indebted. We want to express our love and gratitude via our service to Him. That's Why We Do What We Do

Talent Scouting Programme

An explaination by Lud Lee, Mother Of All Servants. Cut and pasted from his e-mail without edit.

Talent Scouting, Why?
The church, especially creative ministry has been doing recruitment drive for many years and one of the weaknesses is that there is a mismatch in the vacancies available and the resources offered.
The other issue is that sometimes the follow-up is not done due to several factors and one of them is the availability of mentors/coaches/trainers. The other issue would be the time of practice and training. It is either the trainer is not free or the trainee is not available.
Another issue is the lack of staying power of both the trainer and trainee. Couple with that is the availability of opportunity for the trainee to practise their skills.
Looking at the situation above, it would be a better option to talent scout the person. This can at least address some of the issues namely :
1. The availability and readiness of the mentors
2. The availability of the trainees and the commitment of the trainees to be trained for a certain period of time
3. The agreement of time and day of practice and the duration of the training
4. The exact matching of the need with the resource available.
5. The progression of the trainee can be monitored and thus thrust into service at the appropriate time.
With that mentioned, it does not mean that we don't believe in the practise of recruitment drive. On the contrary, we believe and support the recruitment drive fully as we could also "net" some hidden talent from this exercise. The hard work would be to match the talent to the vacancies with the various variables at play.
This perhaps may be a slow process but I believe this is a more effective way of ensuring the people recruited will not fall into the crack.
Please do understand that this is only peculiar to Creative Woship Ministry and not applicable to the other department.

Regards and God Bless

Buddy System

With the kick off of Fixed Teams and Weeks, the buddy system is now possible. It is a link from one team member to another binding the entire team together.

How It Works
1. Worship leader communicates to/pray for/encourages/warns/etc team member no 2
2. Team member 2 who does the same thing to the next person, team member no 3
3. Team member 3, who receives the communication/prayer/encouragement/etc and relays it to team member no 4
and the chain continues until it comes back to the worship leader. In a way you can call this "The Fellowship of the Ring" ha ha

Because it is a fixed team and you have chosen your buddies, if the message is not passed on, the worship leader can PINPOINT who broke the communication. Worship leader can also know if it was communicated wrongly as the chain ends with worship leader!

Wha Good Is This?
  • It enhances fellowship during the time we are not serving. It gives us an opportunity to say hi, and hopefully a start to deeper meaningful conversations and genuine heartfelt prayers
  • It is a system of accountability for everyone in the team. Everyone is accountable for receiving and transmitting to their buddy. Everyone is aware of the going ons, the songlist, the obejctives and is accountable to their buddies and team. Everyone is accountable to their 2 buddies.
  • It builds a belonging in the team with mini ministry. Every member has 2 buddies, one to receive the transmission and the other to relay the transmission. These 2 buddies are also your closest friends in the team. It allows you to share your thoughts/feelings/problems/etc, with these 2 buddies. Ministry can be given and received from your good buddies
  • System of feedback and knowing what the team is going through. IF and when the team members open up to their buddies, the worship leader will have a better understanding of the condition of the team members behaviour, challenges, etc. It will build a more understanding and compassioante team.

Wow it's a brilliant idea. Did you create this system?
I would love to take the credit BUT the truth is I got this idea from Sun Tzu Art of War. No, not the management books, the comics.... sorry to have let you guys down he he. A comic book? Actually a lot of life's lessons are everywhere in everyday living, even in non christian comic books... you just need to let the Spirit of God open your understanding. Same thing with money. It's everywhere. We just need to reach out and earn lot of it legally.

Ok, I am off topic. So a bunch of farmers are fighting against the might of a real army. These farmers chose their padi fields as the terrain for battle. They grouped their farmer soldiers to cover certain sections of the terrain. Those who were from the same family, or farm, were organized into fighting units. They were familiar with one another to the point of being able to recognize the voice of their comrades in the dark! They knew exactly the strength of the guy fighting next to them. And yes, the farmers won. That's where your buddy system came from.

The tool is in place. Are you going to use it?
Are you? The CWC and I can only come out with good systems and environment to serve in. The actual execution is up to you, the Creative Ministry members. I do pray that this will be a step to better fellowship, prayer, unity, accountability and OWNERSHIP to your team.

Gloria In Excelsis Deo.

Power of Music

This song moved so many to tears in the Bollywood show 3 Idiots. We can learn a lot on interpretation, expression and inflections from this song. If we apply to singing in the spirit, it would be a world of dynamics in our worship services! Have a listen and see how perfected their art is. Section one is sung low, and later in the song an octave higher to make it sound like a different part of the song. Section 2 is introduced with loud percussions and later on is modulated a fourth down to create 'another' part in the song. All the standard success formula. And this guy's vocal and inflection is fantastic! Don't forget to pump up the volume on your sub woofers!

Music Room cum Miscellaneous Storage Room

What is a Christmas tree doing in our music room (left changing room) in March? It is still intact with all the decorations on!

#1 - Whose department does it fall under to keep them?
#2 - Does the Creative Dept have the jurisdiction to "throw" away the Christmas tree?
#3 - Can Jon find the person responsible and bill him/her for storage? Cheap cheap lar. RM50 per day, that'll be 70+ days since January 1st.

Wait, what is this?

Alamak! LN notes are on the floor. Now I wonder why they didn't chuck these stuff to the right changing room which is not under Creative Dept jurisdiction. Have a look at the right changing room picture below.

That's why lorr.....

The church belongs to us. We'll have to take care of it. Those kind Creative members who are willing to help clean and manage the room should contact Lud and do something about it!

Song from the Garden of Gethsemane

Here's a song I would like to present for Good Friday.

It will be a perfect song to depict the struggle of Christ to put the will of His Father above His own. The victorious death on the cross for all of mankind!

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS

At the 1st Quarter Meeting, there were complains that the worship leaders were the cause of inefficient practices. The reason was the late songlists. Well, I am a worship leader and I felt challenged. Let's have a look at the worship leaders:

Kingba - full time university student with loads of exams. Lives in Semenyih and travels far to church

This is me..... the ever bee zee guy who is PCC toilet leakage checker, Music Director aka Servant of All, GM for GSUS, van driver, sound engineer, music educator, construction worker, yahoogroup administrator, blogger, father, computer problem solver, etc, etc. In a nutshell very Bee Zee man!

Kok Yen - superman who teaches drums on saturdays, conduct drummer for Christs, father of 2, involved in Family ministry committee, recordings, etc. I would rate him the man with a good heart!

Pastor Ben, a very experienced working man who has chosen to plough the harvest field together with PCC pastoral team. PA to the senior pastor, heading many departments in the church and a passionate man for Jesus.

What about the pictures?
The reason their faces are here is because since that meeting, the worship leaders have got their act together and churned out the songlists early. In February, they even beat the dateline of 1 week earlier. Pastor Ben and myself have given it 2 weeks ahead of schedule. Now what do you say about that?

The bucket is now out of our hands and into YOURS!!! You now have the youtube links, lyrics, yada yada. If the practices turn out bad, it is not the worship leaders fault anymore. The tables are turned. It is now our turn to challenge you, the singers and musicians, to self practice and get the songs nailed on time. :p

FYI, come March, we are armed with a checklist evaluation to fill and we are eagerly awaiting :)

Our prayers as worship leaders is that you will pick up the pace from here and TOGETHER, WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!

WHY YOU SO CALCULATIVE ONE AH? Part I

After being the Music Director for a month, my presence must have been felt in the entire music ministry, at the leaders retreat and maybe the whole church. For those who don't know me well, they'll be wondering what kind of guy I am. If they have been within eaves dropping distance, the term, "fine RM5" can be concluded as my mantra. If they have been near any of the Central Working Committee meetings, they would hear about 4 and 5 star resorts, Hillsong Conference in Sydney, Music Camp at Shangri-La Putrajaya, etc. Maybe they would even have heard me mumble and grumble about how much money/time/resources was wasted or need to be used OR why I have to work on a sunday. How this or that service was worth how much, etc..... I think you get the picture. At the back of some people's mind, maybe, they are saying, "Why you so calculative one ah?"

Why you so money minded one ah?
The bombshell could have been the RM400 charge to the Sound Engineering Level 1 course to beef up our sound personnel.

Wow, RM400?! Crazy* ah? I'll let Lud, assistant Music Director, answer that in his soon to be post on this blog. The talent scouting programme and the professional charge was actually his idea. I merely implemented it. However, let me say this. GSUS Sound Engineering Level 1 started at RM300 per pax in 2002. It has risen to RM400, today's price, and is the most popular music course the company has. GSUS conducts this course all over the country 2 to 3 times yearly. A course like this would cost 2 to 3 times outside. Here's the paradime shift: It is CRAZY* not to take the course at RM400 in church when people will pay thousands to learn! It is even CRAZIER* to serve God with peanut skills and CRAZIER STILL* to have peanut trained guys handling a RM110,000 sound system! Would you let just any of the sound team members take your Camry for a spin? 2 year old Camry's should be about RM110k. If not, I will not have un-trained personnel take our sound system for a spin while I'm Music Director!

Of course if the church members agree to spend RM110,000 PLUS inflation every 5 years or so on a new sound system, JUST TO MAINTAIN, then PTL! If not, wouldn't RM400 look like peanuts? It even looks like FREE.... aargghhhhHH!!!! I hate that word.

Back to the topic "Why You So Calculative One ah?"

And the answer, my dear Watson, is found in Luke 14:25-31. Let your attention focus on this word....COST. Verses 28 till 30 exhorts us to calculate the cost of following Jesus before embarking. Otherwise if we are unable to follow Him all till the end, then others will ridicule you. Now for the theological explaination, we will leave it to Pastor. But the gist is: there is a cost to everything. NOTHING IS WITHOUT COST!

Really but what about salvation? It's free
Yes it is! But it cost the son of God His life. Jesus died for you and me. Free salvation, yes, but with a heavy price to pay. It cost the lives of martyrs and missionaries to bring the 'free' gospel to the whole world. Even if transportation by water is free, it still cost someone's sweat to row the boat! But... I mean... but everything in the church is suppose to be free? I will avoid getting myself into this messy debate but I will categorily state, " It may be free but someone paid for the cost." Let's use the example of the Christmas programme Feed One Thousand in 2008. We, the church members paid for the tickets, to feed the community. In other words, free for the community; cost borne by you and me.

So there is a cost.... so what?
Well, everytime you come late for practice, we wait, usually doing nothing. It could be worse. We could be anointed with anger :) Time, for some of us, is worth RM18 per hour. For others it may be RM200 per hour. Still others will find these figures a big understatement. Sometimes it's not about the money. It's about someone sacrificing (cost again) 3 hours to come for practice when they are having exams or the sacrifice could be their family time. Do you really want to let down that person by coming an hour late? What about the fellowship/skillset, etc denied by you to your fellow team members when you don't show up? You basically short changed the team. Yep, that's the cost the team members have to bear when you don't show up on time or not at all!

But... but.... I just want to sing for the Lord
Do you want to sing well for the Lord OR just sing for the Lord? If it is sing well, then get trained! There are trainers for RM18 per hour and they go all the way to RMXXX per hour. XXX because it is an obscene amount of money. So how much have you spent on training your voice for the last 10 years? Is it any wonder we are on a plato and not improving? If we don't break the everything if church is FREE mentality, we are not going to foot the high cost. If we don't pay well, which good trainer would want to come all the way to PCC to train you? To be honest, you could still get good trainers to come.... at their own time and choosing. Could you run a consistent training regime base on as and when the trainers are free? BOOOMMMMM!!!!! There's the word again: FREE! Really, nothing is ever free. It is always costed in. Don't believe me? Look at Digi and Maxis promotions. "But this is church, not business", you may protest. Still don't believe me? Let me show you what was costed in to your FREE salvation. You are now not your own, having been bought by the blood of the lamb,,,, your body is now the living sacrifice , etc etc. Theorectically, God owns all Christians through the sacrifice of His son on the cross. Incidentally, that means not only your body but time, money, property, talent, influence, etc. Next time someone says free, ask what is the hidden cost! Oops..... the preachers did not mention all this when they asked for salvation prayer. YES THEY DID! It is in the fineprint, "I now accept Jesus as the saviour and LORD of my life.....".

Sitting in front of my laptop coming out with this blog cost me hours. Sigh... more costs.

Why can't we have better this and that?
Because it is costly and we don't want to pay for it. Good things need more time to make. Time is money. Therefore, good things cost more. Do you want the surgeon to finish the surgery in one hour because you want to keep a ceiling cost? Or would you want him to FINISH a good job and take more time? I hope we get the picture. If not go buy an imitation 3G iPhone from China for RM300. after 1 month, read this article again. So do we want a good worship team? Do we want good sound? Do we want good presentations? Do we want good wifes? Sorry, shouldn't bring the wifes in; now that's going to be super messy ha ha ha

Our Challenge
To improve the Creative Ministry Dept, we will need to pump in more resources. The costs rises in tandem to the quality we want to achieve. Now costs may not be equated with only money. It could be the commitment. The time put in to perfect the song, dance, etc. It could be the prayer efforts. Enthusiasm and excitement may not cost money, BUT it sure requires a lot of sacrifice from the members and leaders. Cost of energy and time, skillsets, plaanning and organization, etc, etc.

Yes, cost, money and calculations go on in my mind. All the time. Everytime I think about the church music department, all types of costs come to play. I want to send our guys to be trained by the best. But a trip to Hillsongs will cost! All these late night meetings over dinner/supper to plan with the CWC are costly. It cost money to treat the worship leaders to a meal. But that was well worth it. I believe that was the first time the music director took his tireless and faithful worship leaders out in the ENTIRE history of Praise City Church. Ok ok I may be exaggerating. BUT this I AM CERTAIN: Never once was I taken out for dinner as a worship leader section. We did go out for a dinner with all musicians once when Bernard took over. We do have once a year appreciation dinner for all serving. AND we definitely need to do more of these fellowship dinner if we are to improve things.

Conclusion?
How can I possibly conclude? There is just so much more to say and explain. Maybe this might help bring things into perspective. The church is not a business entity, that we are very clear. Let's assume, and I stress ASSUME, that the leader bears all these cost of makan, etc to streghten his department. If I can put aside RM1,200 per year, then I will be able to achieve RM1,200 worth of things with it. Now, would you the members think that is acceptable? How much can you do with RM1,200 a year to a department that has 30 plus members? So, do you expect me to put in more? Let's say I sacrifice my dinner budget with my family and double that amount to RM2,400 per year for the makan, etc of the Creative members. What can that possibly achieve? A little more mileage just to keep up with inflation! IMAGINE WITH ME if we can mobilise the entire department to pump in RM1,200 per person. That would be over RM40,000 per year. Now, what would that achieve? I could then send 10 to 15 of our members to the Hillsong Conference! So at the end of the day, I may not be as money minded as you think. I am actually goal and objective minded to train and give you the best to perform unto the Lord. If that is who I am, then what does it make those who go around not counting the cost and 'lepaking' around the pews? Those that think all things in church should be free, read Luke 14:25-31 again. Mull that and comment below!
